Passion Fruit Mousse

I discovered the joy of passion fruit at a Del Mar Mesa Garden Club tour hosted by a member, who introduced passion fruit to me. The yellow pulp with seeds tastes like the tropics: sweet and tart with hints of orange and pineapple. Passion fruit is known for its antioxidant features. In San Diego, it is in season from July through December.

You can find passion fruit at your local grocery store and farmer’s market. Look for dimpled fruit with a fragrant scent. Store it at room temperature on your countertop.

This Passion Fruit Mousse is a delicious, make-ahead dessert with only three ingredients: passion fruit, powdered sugar, and whipping cream. Enjoy!

Serves 4

Ingredients:

6 passion fruit

1 pint heavy whipping cream

1/4 cup powdered sugar

Method:

  1. Cut each passion fruit in half. Scoop out the pulp. Reserve one quarter cup of the passion fruit pulp.

  2. Set up a fine mesh strainer over a sturdy bowl and place the remaining pulp in the strainer. Then use a spatula to press, spread and scrape the pulp into the strainer. Set aside the passion fruit juice.

  3. Pour one pint of heavy whipping cream into a blender/mixer and mix until the heavy cream has stiff peaks.

  4. Add ¼ cup powdered sugar into the whipped cream. Place the whipped cream in a large bowl.

  5. Fold the passion fruit juice into the whipped cream. Then add combined mousse to the serving dishes/cups.

  6. Top each dish with a spoonful of the passion fruit pulp.

Notes:

Passion fruit originates in beautiful passion fruit flowers. Above is a photo of the breath-taking flower.
